Setts
Natural stone setts, in granite or sandstone, have a hand-cut look that suits older gardens. Concrete setts come in consistent sizes and many colours. Both are ideal for curves and circles, where large slabs would need lots of cutting.
Pavers
Clay and concrete pavers give a neat, traditional look for a courtyard or a patio beside a brick house. Herringbone and basketweave patterns add interest.
Permeable options
Block paving can be laid with open joints over a free-draining base, so rain soaks through rather than running off. That's useful in gardens where drainage is limited.
Mixing materials
A sett border around a Yorkstone terrace, a circle of setts set into a lawn, or a paver path linking two terraces: small units help a garden hang together.
